The Best Boat Tours in St. Thomas: A Local’s Honest Guide
I’ve lived on St. Thomas long enough to know which boat tours are worth your money — and which ones are just floating you around Charlotte Amalie Harbor while charging you resort prices for warm beer.
Here’s the thing most visitors don’t realize: the water around St. Thomas is some of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. We’re talking visibility so clear you can see 60 feet down. Reefs that are still alive and thriving. Sea turtles that genuinely do not care that you’re swimming next to them. But where you go — and who takes you — makes all the difference.
So here’s my honest breakdown of what to look for when you’re booking a boat tour in St. Thomas.
Small Group vs. Big Catamaran: Know the Difference
The big catamaran tours are the ones you see advertised everywhere. They hold 40-80 people, they hit the same two spots every day, and the rum punch flows freely (which is the point, honestly). If you want a booze cruise with a crowd, go for it — no judgment.
But if you want to actually experience the water? Book a small-group or private tour. You’ll go to different spots. You’ll have room to actually snorkel without kicking someone in the face. And a good captain will adjust the trip based on conditions and your interests instead of running the same loop on autopilot.
The Best Snorkeling Spots (That the Big Boats Skip)
Most tour companies take you to the same heavily-trafficked reefs. They’re fine. They’re pretty. But the reef systems on the quieter sides of the island — the ones a local captain knows about — are on another level.
I won’t give away all my favorite spots (a girl’s got to keep some secrets), but I’ll tell you this: the best snorkeling near St. Thomas isn’t always right off St. Thomas. The cays and small islands surrounding us — Lovango, Cas Cay, the outer edges of the St. Thomas East End Reserve — have reef systems that will genuinely blow your mind.
When you’re shopping for a snorkeling tour, ask: “Where exactly do we snorkel?” If they can’t give you a specific answer beyond “the reef,” keep looking.
Sunset Cruises: Worth It or Tourist Trap?
Worth it. Full stop. But with a caveat.
A St. Thomas sunset from the water is a spiritual experience. I’m not being dramatic. The sky does things here that I’ve never seen anywhere else. But you want a boat that actually positions you on the west side of the island with an unobstructed view — not one that’s still motoring back to the dock while the sun sets behind you.
Ask what time the cruise departs and where you’ll be anchored during golden hour. That’s the detail that separates a magical evening from a pretty-but-rushed one.
Private Charters: When to Splurge
If it’s a special occasion — anniversary, birthday, proposal, or you just want a day that’s entirely yours — a private charter is the move. The cost per person often isn’t much more than a big group tour once you split it among friends or family, and the experience isn’t even comparable.
With a private charter, you choose where to go. You choose how long to stay. You choose whether to snorkel for two hours or just float in a cove and read a book. That freedom is worth every dollar.
How to Choose the Right Tour (Quick Checklist)
However you book, ask these questions before you hand over a deposit:
- How many people are on the boat? Get a real number, not “small group.”
- Where exactly do we snorkel? A specific answer beats a vague one every time.
- What time do we leave, and where will we be at sunset? This decides whether golden hour actually happens on the water or on the dock.
- Is the captain licensed and insured? Always ask, no matter how good the boat looks in photos.
- What’s actually included? Gear, drinks, food — get it in writing so there are no surprises dockside.
Any operator worth your money will answer all five without hesitating.
